La Liga:Guardiola praise for Barca attitude

Pep Guardiola has admitted that Barcelona was far from their best in their 1-0 win over Sporting Gijon.

With injured Argentina international and Barca favourite Lionel Messi watching from the stands, David Villa's scored just after the break to seal all three points for Guardiola's charges despite an indifferent display from the Catalan giants.

The result took Barca to third in the La Liga standings and left Guardiola praising his side's attitude and reflecting on Messi's absence.

"It was not a brilliant game but it was a good match, but the attitude has been perfect and I'm sure the next day we'll do better," he told reporters after the game.

"This time we didn't get after the opposition which is what you need to do against opponents that sit back and don't come at you. We lacked a second goal which would have given us peace.

"Messi is an irreplaceable player, if he was here we would have won 5-0 but he was not and we had to play another in his place.

"Villa has contributed a lot but lacked precision in the first half but then he scored. He brings a lot when he comes from outside as well as up front and through the centre.

"This is the way it goes and we have to get used to it. The worst thing, rather than the accumulation of matches is the lack of training. There are players who are still lacking strength and endurance work."
