Davies gets shock England call

Bolton striker Kevin Davies has been picked by England, a week after he admitted he has given up on representing his country.

Fabio Capello's squad for the Euro 2012 qualifier with Montenegro at Wembley next Tuesday is littered with surprises, and includes recalls for Joe Cole, Robert Green, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry and Aaron Lennon.

But it is the inclusion of 33-year-old Davies that will raise the biggest eyebrow as England look to maintain their 100% start to Group G.

Ahead of Bolton's Premier League draw with Manchester United last weekend, Davies spoke of his unfulfilled international ambitions.

"I was in the expanded squad a couple of times but even when a few players pulled out and I thought I had a chance, someone else got called up," he told ESPN.

Little did he know at the time that Capello was looking at him closely once more.

And, while Wayne Rooney has been given the green light to join up with the squad, with Bobby Zamora and Gabriel Agbonlahor ruled out through injury and Andy Carroll bypassed after a recent dip in form at Newcastle, Davies has shot ahead in the queue.

Whether a player who has served Bolton so loyally for seven full seasons after failing to make an impression at Blackburn and in his second spell at Southampton actually gets to make an appearance remains to be seen.

Only on Monday morning, quotes have been released by the FA confirming the Italian's belief that Darren Bent could be a pivotal player in the future, while Peter Crouch - also named in the squad - went to the World Cup.

Indeed, counting Ferdinand, 14 members of Capello's World Cup squad are named, including Cole and Lennon, who have not been selected since.

Cole has endured a far from smooth ride since his arrival at Liverpool from Chelsea, and his dismissal on his Premier League debut against Arsenal in August and the suspension that followed were probably contributing factors in his missing the qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland.

Both of those matches were won, with Phil Jagielka contributing towering central defensive performances in the absence of Ferdinand and Terry.

As Jagielka keeps his place, Capello faces a tricky selection dilemma when he names his starting line-up.

The same could also be said of the captaincy given the mature manner in which Steven Gerrard handled the fall-out from Rooney's off-field problems last month.

In addition, Ferdinand has been overlooked for the honour at Manchester United by Sir Alex Ferguson due to his questionable fitness record.

For Green, it will be a relief to be back, and a chance to show he can recover from the nightmare handling error against the United States in Rustenburg that set the tone for England's dismal campaign.

Spurs fans would regard the introduction of Tom Huddlestone as long overdue given the injection of youth into Capello's squad.

With James Milner suspended, Arsenal's Jack Wilshere gets a call, although he will only report for duty after England's European Under-21 Championship play-off first leg against Romania in Norwich on Friday.

Blackpool piled the misery on struggling Liverpool with a famous 2-1 win at Anfield to leave the Reds rooted in the bottom three.

Charlie Adam fired Blackpool in front from the penalty spot after Glen Johnson had brought down Luke Varney inside the box.

Varney added a second on the stroke of half-time to leave Liverpool leaving the field at the break to a chorus of boos.

Sotirios Kyrgiakos pulled a goal back on 53 minutes when he headed home Steven Gerrard's free-kick, but despite some late pressure Blackpool held on for a deserved three points.

To add to Liverpool's problems Fernando Torres lasted less than ten minutes after appearing to injure his groin.

Chelsea moved four points clear at the top of the table after a goal in each half from Didier Drogba and Alex earned them a vital 2-0 victory over London rivals Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.

Drogba backheeled Ashley Cole's low cross into the net at the near post five minutes before the break for his 13th goal against Arsene Wenger's side in 11 starts.

Defender Alex then settled the contest with a powerful 30-yard free-kick in the 85th minute to hand the Gunners their second successive league defeat.

Adam Johnson was Manchester City's instant hero at Eastlands as he scored the winner in the 2-1 victory over Newcastle.

Johnson had only been on the field for three minutes when he nipped into the Magpies' box and belted a precise shot into the far corner.

It settled a thrilling encounter, which began with a suspected broken leg for Hatem Ben Arfa before the outstanding Jonas Gutierrez levelled Carlos Tevez's penalty.

On Saturday, Manchester United wasted the opportunity to close the gap on Barclays Premier League leaders Chelsea after being held to a goalless draw by Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

The match was delayed for 20 minutes because of a burst pipe in the visitors' dressing room and it appeared to affect Sir Alex Ferguson's side more as when the match finally kicked off they began on the back foot.

Steed Malbranque should have put the Black Cats ahead early on from eight yards out but failed to beat goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, who saved low down.

Just before the break Bolo Zenden hit a post but United came back stronger in the second half and Dimitar Berbatov, coming on for Michael Owen, had a goal rightly disallowed for offside.

Sunderland almost took the lead when Malbranque's shot deflected up off Rio Ferdinand but looped just over the crossbar as the hosts were more than worthy of a point.

Summer signing Rafael van der Vaart starred for Tottenham, scoring twice as the hosts came from behind to beat Aston Villa 2-1.

The visitors took the lead in the 16th minute as striker Emile Heskey, who went off injured just before half-time, won the ball close to the byline and picked out Marc Albrighton, who converted from close range.

Van Der Vaart levelled things up from Peter Crouch's header just before half-time and he should have put his side in front shortly after the interval but shot wide from seven yards.

However, he made up for that miss in the 75th minute after benefiting from another Crouch header.

Jon Walters' first Premier League goal lifted Stoke up to seventh in the table after a 1-0 win over Blackburn.

The summer signing from Ipswich latched on to Matt Etherington's through-ball to shoot past Paul Robinson in the 48th minute.

Rovers' goalkeeper kept them in the game by denying Etherington soon after but his side could not force an equaliser.

Real Mallorca held Barcelona to a shock 1-1 draw at Camp Nou on Sunday evening.

Emilio Nsue headed a shock equaliser to sting Barca as Pep Guardiola's fell three points behind Primera Division leaders Valencia.

Lionel Messi gave Barcelona the lead after 20 minutes on his first league start since injuring an ankle in the 2-1 win at Atletico Madrid two weeks ago.

But young striker Nsue levelled for the islanders shortly before half-time and the home side could not find a way through in the second period.

Villarreal continued their excellent start to the season by beating Racing Santander 2-0 on Sunday to stay second.

The Yellow Submarine had been aiming to go top of the table for the first time in their history, but those hopes were scuppered on Saturday as leaders Valencia beat Athletic Bilbao to hold on to first place.

Nevertheless, a win to keep them within a point of their regional rivals never looked in doubt after the home side scored twice within 13 minutes.

Nilmar opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the season after eight minutes and Giuseppe Rossi doubled the hosts' lead five minutes later.

New boss Gregorio Manzano enjoyed his first home match in charge as Sevilla jumped above Atletico Madrid with a 3-1 victory.

Goals from Alvaro Negredo and Diego Perotti gave Sevilla a two-goal half-time lead, to which Frederic Kanoute added early in the second half.

Diego Costa pulled one back for Atletico, but Quique Sanchez Flores' team could not find another goal to make it a close finish.

Getafe picked up their third league victory of the season after comfortably seeing off promoted Hercules 3-0 at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

First-half goals from Dani Parejo and Manu del Moral set Getafe on their way and substitute Miku added a third late on to seal a convincing win for Michel's side, who also hit the woodwork twice.

Hercules, who have caused two huge upsets this season with wins over Barcelona and Sevilla, could have no complaints about the result and a disappointing afternoon for them was complete when they had Abel Aguilar sent off in the 89th minute.

Levante came away from Osasuna with a barely deserved 1-1 draw after being outclassed by their hosts for much of the encounter at Estadio Reyno de Navarra.

After spurning a glut of chances, Osasuna finally went ahead through Walter Pandiani 18 minutes from time only for Levante to level through Sergio Gonzalez seven minutes later with their first shot on target.

Juanfran might have snatched all the points for the hosts late on but Levante goalkeeper Manuel Reina, as he did for much of the afternoon, stood up to the chance.

Kalu Uche's missed penalty proved crucial as Almeria were held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Malaga.

Malaga, who entered the game with two wins from two on the road, had seen Pereira Eliseu sent off in the 40th minute for violent conduct after he reacted to a heavy challenge by Juanma Ortiz.

Real Sociedad ended a three-match losing streak by seeing off Espanyol thanks to a late own goal from visiting defender Juan Forlin at the Anoeta.

An evenly-matched encounter looked destined to finish in a draw until Forlin inadvertently put the ball into his own net as he acrobatically tried to clear the danger after Jeffrey Sarpong's free-kick had come back off the woodwork.

That was in the 86th minute and proved to be the winner, although Sociedad were indebted to goalkeeper Claudio Bravo for keeping their lead intact after he produced two brilliant saves in stoppage time - leaving Espanyol still without any points or goals away from home.

Lazio moved to the top of the Serie A table - for the time being at least - with a narrow 1-0 win over 10-man Brescia on Sunday.

Stefano Mauri's solitary goal on the stroke of half-time was the difference between the two sides at the Stadio Olimpico.

Brescia's task grew harder when Alessandro Diamanti was sent off after 74 minutes for two yellow cards.

The win, Lazio's fourth of the campaign, has lifted the Romans two points clear of AC Milan and three points above Inter Milan, who host Juventus later tonight.

High-flying Chievo were left frustrated after being held to a goalless draw by Cagliari at Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi.

The Flying Donkeys went into the game lying third in Serie A, but they missed out on the chance to record a fourth win of the season due to their profligacy in front of goal.

Kevin Constant, Sergio Pellissier and Pablo Granoche wasted their best opportunities but the result should at least provide some respite for Cagliari coach Pierpaolo Bisoli, who has been criticised by sections of the club's support.

Fiorentina's frailties returned to haunt them as they slumped to a disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to Palermo.

La Viola's win over Parma last week was their first in Serie A this season and eased the pressure on coach Sinisa Mihajlovic, but they failed to build on that result as first-half strikes from Josip Ilicic and Javier Pastore sealed the points for Palermo.

Alberto Gilardino pulled one back for the hosts after the break and Mihajlovic's men might have snatched at a point had Adem Ljajic not seen his 64th-minute penalty saved by Palermo goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu.

The hosts' misery was compounded when Riccardo Montolivo picked up a straight red card 16 minutes from time.

Napoli claimed their first Serie A win at the Stadio San Paolo this season as two late goals helped them beat Roma 2-0.

Marek Hamsik got the ball rolling for Napoli in the 72nd minute before Roma defender Juan deflected Hugo Campagnaro's cross into his own net with seven minutes remaining.

Luca Toni's first goal for Genoa at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris was enough to earn the Grifone their first win at home this season.

Daniele Portanova's own goal gave Samp the lead just before half-time - but the hosts hit back to earn a draw with Miguel Britos' header from Marco Di Vaio's free-kick.

A glorious goal from Andrea Pirlo gave AC Milan a 1-0 victory over Parma at the Stadio Tardini on Saturday.

The Italy midfielder let rip with a stunning long-range effort which would have deserved to win any game in the 25th minute.

Premier League:"Sacking Hodsgon would be crazy"

Liverpool legend Ray Clemence has labeled talks of an instant dismissal for Roy Hodgson as "crazy".

The former Fulham coach, who took over from Rafael Benitez, has been under intense scrutiny following Sunday's embarrassing 2-1 defeat at home to Blackpool which leaves them in the relegation zone after seven games.

Despite critics calling for the blood of the 63-year-old, Clemence has urged for level heads at Anfield and that the club get behind their manager in these difficult times.

"No-one expected them to be where they are in the table, although everybody expected a transitional year.

"It's crazy to talk about getting rid of him - they've got an excellent manager who will get things right given time and patience.

"But his hands are tied and the thing is nothing can be sorted lower down until the top end of the club is sorted out.

"It's time to stay together and be patient, keep feet on the ground and make sensible decisions. I'm sure they will be able to climb again.

"The decision on the manager has been made and everyone should stick behind him."

Premier League:Giggs: I want to manage Man Utd

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has admitted for the first time that he would love to manage the club.

The 36-year-old winger has spent his entire career at Old Trafford but concedes his playing days will soon be at an end.

With an eye to the future, the Welsh wizard is currently taking his Uefa coaching badges.

He was linked with the vacant Wales post after previous boss John Toshack confirmed his resignation last month but ruled himself out of the race.

But he admits he would love to manage both United and Wales one day, although he accepts he will make to cut his managerial teeth away from Old Trafford before a possible return.

Giggs told The Sun: "I think I will probably finish my career here (at Old Trafford).

"I am at an age now where it is coming to an end pretty soon. I cannot see myself dropping down leagues and playing at a lesser level.

"If you do decide to go into management, for me the ultimate jobs are Wales and Manchester United, purely because I have played for my country and for the team I supported. Those two would be the best ones for me.

"If that was to happen I shouldn't think I'd be able to take over straight away. So if I was to go into management I would have to go elsewhere and be very successful - then come back."

Premier League:Wenger: We must beat title rivals

Arsene Wenger maintains it is vital Arsenal win the head-to-head battles against their title rivals - starting at Chelsea.

The Gunners suffered a shock home defeat to West Brom last weekend, although quickly got that out of their system with a hard-fought 3-1 victory away to Partizan Belgrade in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Another loss at Chelsea - themselves beaten at Manchester City - would leave Arsenal seven points adrift of the leaders, and potentially out of the top four should other results go against them.

Last season, Arsenal were beaten home and away by both Chelsea and Manchester United, with a double over fading Liverpool little consolation.

Their next away match is Manchester City after the international break on October 24.

While Wenger knows nothing will be decided on Sunday, the Arsenal manager concedes the clashes between the leading contenders have taken on extra significance.

"The only team I have seen win the Premier League without winning the big games is Manchester United," he said.

"It is vitally important to win the big games."

Wenger added: "It is easier to play Chelsea on Sunday when they have lost two games than two weeks ago, that is for sure.

"Every defeat makes you just a fraction smaller."

The Gunners head across to west London with a poor record against the Blues since they were the dominant force in English football, recording just two wins from the previous 17 meetings, including defeats in the 2007 Carling Cup final and an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley during April 2009.

Wenger may be without captain Cesc Fabregas because of injury, along with the likes of centre-half Thomas Vermaelen, first-choice keeper Manuel Almunia and forwards Theo Walcott and Robin van Persie, but the Arsenal manager insists his young squad have the talent to combat the power of Chelsea.

"What for you is physical strength? How can you explain Spain winning the World Cup and Barcelona beating Chelsea in the Champions League?" Wenger said.

"Football is not only down to physique. It is down to intelligence, technique, mobility.

"There is not one way. That is what makes it interesting."

With Vermaelen still sidelined by an Achilles problem picked up during the last international break, new centre-back pairing Sebastien Squillaci and Laurent Koscielny will aim to shackle Didier Drogba, who has 12 goals in 10 games against the Gunners.

However, Wenger - who scouted the 32-year-old when Drogba was at French club Guingamp - maintained: "I feel we should not make an obsession of one player of Chelsea because they have a few players who can score goals against us.

"What is important is that we had the ball, that we dominate the game and that we are efficient defensively.

"Nothing is for ever, so we can stop it."

Premier League:O'Shea: An away win is overdue!

John O'Shea will peel himself away from the Ryder Cup to try to help Manchester United record their first Premier League away win.

The Irishman is a keen golfer, lauded by some as the best player in the United dressing room.

With fellow countryman Padraig Harrington involved, he will be keeping a close eye on Europe's progress at the soggy surrounds of Celtic Manor.

But on Saturday afternoon, the only sporting event O'Shea is interested in will be United's trip to the Stadium of Light to face Sunderland.

And the defender knows the Red Devils should be heading north with at least two away wins under their belts already after the unusual late collapses at Fulham and Everton.

"We should definitely have a couple of away wins on the board right now," he said.

"I can't really explain why it has gone wrong. Teams have not been tearing us apart. It has literally been the drop of a ball that has gone against us.

"It is only a matter of time before we start keeping clean sheets away from home and there is no better time to start than on Saturday.

"Not that we are under any illusions about how difficult the task is going to be.

"We have had very tough games at Sunderland down the years and it seems Steve Bruce in particular enjoys the battles against his old manager."

O'Shea is set for a recall after missing Wednesday's Champions League win over Valencia at the Mestalla Stadium.

As generally happens when United have to play twice in a week, Sir Alex Ferguson will make a significant number of changes as his team try to cope with the physical demands of following up a European away-day with a road trip in the Premier League.

"It isn't easy but we have done it enough down the years to know how to handle it," he said.

"You have to respond to it positively, otherwise you don't get the right result and it can end up costing you in the league.

"We must have the right attitude and the right physical approach.

"If we don't, Sunderland will come out on top."

The plan is to collect three points, then spend Sunday flicking between the golf and Chelsea's blockbuster encounter with Arsenal.

"I am interested in the Ryder Cup," he said.

"A lot of the guys in the dressing room like to play, although it is obviously difficult when the European games start up.

"Most of us are of similar standard, which is not very good.

"But we are all looking forward to Europe winning this weekend."

La Liga:Lionel Messi: Barcelona is my home!

Lionel Messi has again pledged his loyalty to Barcelona after winning the European Golden Boot award on Thursday evening.

The Argentinean ace, who was bestowed with the honour after scoring 34 league goals in the 2009/10 campaign for his club, spoke of his intention to see off his career at the Nou Camp.

He was quoted as saying in Spanish sports daily Marca: "This is what I always say: Barcelona is my home and I hope that I stay here for many years."

The 23-year-old joined the Catalan club a decade ago and has since progressed into one of the most gifted players in his generation.

His latest award adds on to the Ballon d'Or and the FIFA World Player of the Year he collected in 2009.

Premier League Weekend Preview

Carlo Ancelotti will take charge of Chelsea's game against Arsenal on Sunday despite the death of his father.

Giuseppe Ancelotti passed away in Italy last night aged 87, with his son at his side.

The funeral will take place on Saturday but the Blues boss plans to be at Stamford Bridge for his side's game 24 hours later.

"Everyone at Chelsea sends our deepest condolences to Carlo and his family. They are all in our thoughts at this time," read a statement on the club's official website, www.chelseafc.com.

Arsenal once again could be without captain Cesc Fabregas for this weekend's crunch clash.

The midfielder has been out for almost two weeks with a hamstring injury and was today omitted from Spain's squad for their upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers against Scotland and Lithuania.

Darren Fletcher is expecting Javier Hernandez to do great things for Manchester United.

Although Hernandez's chances have been restricted since his summer signing from Mexican side Chivas, he proved to be the matchwinner in Valencia last night as United recorded a rare Champions League victory in Spain.

And Fletcher anticipates there is more to come from the 22-year-old ahead of Saturday's trip to Sunderland.

"He showed he is going to be a great player for Manchester United," said the Scotland captain.

"He is young and still getting used to the way we play. But he has come in from Mexico and is a real talent."

Ledley King has told his team-mates it is time prove they are not "the same old Tottenham" by following their Champions League thrashing of FC Twente by beating Aston Villa on Saturday.

Spurs captain King admits the club have too often allowed their standards to slip in the immediate aftermath of their European matches.

"The spotlight is on us and teams are waiting for us to slip up, saying we're the same old Tottenham," said the 29-year-old.

"We don't want to be like that. We're at home to Villa and those are the games that we need to take three points from."

Stiliyan Petrov will continue as Aston Villa captain under new manager Gerard Houllier.

Bulgaria midfielder Petrov was given the armband in succession to Gareth Barry two years ago when the latter looked destined to move to Liverpool before eventually signing for Manchester City 12 months later.

Houllier said: "I won't change captain. The captain is not only the leader on the field. He is a leader by example."

Stoke boss Tony Pulis believes Matthew Etherington and Ryan Shawcross deserve call-ups to the England squad for the forthcoming Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro.

Premier League:Fabregas to miss Chelsea clash

Arsenal will be without captain Cesc Fabregas for Sunday's Barclays Premier League clash with Chelsea.

On Thursday the 23-year-old midfielder was left out of the Spain squad for the upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers against Lithuania and Scotland and is not considered fit enough to lead the Gunners this weekend as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury sustained almost two weeks ago.

Goalkeeper Manuel Almunia also remains sidelined after missing the midweek Champions League win at Partizan Belgrade with an elbow injury, meaning Lukasz Fabianski is again set to deputise.

Manager Arsene Wenger also confirmed today that left-back Kieran Gibbs will be out for two to three weeks with a calf injury which will also see the 21-year-old miss England Under-21s' European Championship play-off against Romania.

Wenger said: "Fabregas is not fit to play in this one and nor is Almunia.

"We lost Gibbs as well on Tuesday night with a calf problem and he is out of the England squad as well. He is out for two to three weeks."

Thomas Vermaelen (Achilles), Nicklas Bendtner (groin), Aaron Ramsey (leg), Theo Walcott and Robin van Persie (both ankle) are still out, but Abou Diaby returns to the squad after an ankle problem.

La Liga:De Gea rubbishes Man United link

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David de Gea has dismissed reports linking him with a move to Manchester United.

Speaking to journalists, De Gea said he was happy at Atletico and was not looking for a move.

He said: "I appreciate that the big clubs of the world care about me, but I am very happy here. If you're comfortable at a club, why would you change it?

"I want to keep growing here. I still have many things to do.

"I love to play in these colours, and want to enjoy more moments like those I have, and help the team as much as possible. I want to spend many years here."

The player also spoke about his chances in the World Cup winning Spain squad, saying: "They [Iker Casillas, Victor Valdes and Pepe Reina] are the three best goalkeepers at the moment.

"In Valdes, his highlight is one-on-ones, Casillas has almost everything, while Reina has plenty of power and agility."

De Gea was amazed how quickly his ascent in professional football was, saying: "It has been very nice and an important year in my career.

"Playing in the shirt of Atletico Madrid was my dream.

"Everything happened so fast, and I have not had time to take it all in. I'm really enjoying everything that has happened to me."

Premier League:Drogba reveals Arsenal love affair

Didier Drogba admits it will 'mean a lot' to face Arsenal at the weekend after admiring the team in his early playing career.

The Blues entertain their London rivals at Stamford Bridge on Sunday in one of the biggest clashes of the Premier League season.

And former Marseille man Drogba says he is relishing the encounter after following Arsene Wenger's side during his playing days in France.

"I love playing big games and I love playing against Arsenal," Ivory Coast striker Drogba told Sky Sports News.

"I always say that Arsenal is one of my favourite teams.

"When I was playing in France, Arsenal was an example for us because there were all these French players who used to play in the French league and went abroad to play for Arsenal with a French manager.

"So to play against them for me means a lot."

Both Chelsea and Arsenal enter the capital derby on the back of their first Premier League defeats of the campaign last weekend, against Manchester City and West Brom respectively.

However, the two sides have gone some way to compensate for their losses with success in their midweek UEFA Champions League group games.

Drogba has underlined the importance of Sunday's clash, insisting it is crucial defending champions Chelsea do not relinquish another three points.

"I don't think we can afford to lose a second game, especially against Arsenal," he said.

"People have to know, and we know, that we're going to lose some games this season.

"But again, it's always good to win, it's always better to win."

Drogba was substituted in the 75th minute of Chelsea's 1-0 defeat at City last Saturday, and admits he was surprised to make an early exit.

However, the striking ace insists he respects manager Carlo Ancelotti's decision.

"I was surprised because I didn't expect that at that moment of the game," he added.

"But the managers always decide and I think he had some reasons and I understand them."

Manchester City at home to Juventus is the pick of Thursday's Europa League matches for a number of reasons. For one, there has been a lot of talk between the two sides ahead of the clash.

Juventus' Marco Motta did not do himself any favours in Manchester by declaring that City are "proof of how big-name signings and big spending are not enough to obtain great results."

One of those expensive new arrivals that Motta talked about is Jerome Boateng, who manager Roberto Mancini is debating whether or not to hand the Germany star his first start against Juventus at Eastlands.

Adding more spice to what should be an entertaining contest, Mancini has openly said he used to support Juve as a boy but that Thursday's match won't be a special occasion for him.

Juve go into this encounter with a poor defensive record but boss Luigi Del Neri remains confident his side can get the result they need following their opening round draw with KKS Lech Poznan.

The Polish side play FC Salzburg next.

Atletico Madrid did not get their defence of the Europa League off to a good start when they came away form Greece as shock 1-0 losers to a team many pundits might struggle to spell. Aris Thessaloniki FC did themselves proud that night but do not expect the same lethargic performance from Atletico on Thursday as they host German side Bayer Leverkusen.

Quique Sanchez Flores' men have actually started the season well - they beat Inter Milan in the UEFA Super Cup - and are currently fifth in the Spanish La Liga after five rounds.

Bayer Leverkusen, who smashed Rosenborg BK 4-0 in their opening Group B match, might still fancy coming away from Spain with at least point, especially with ex-Real Madrid manager Jupp Heynckes' knowledge of Spanish football at their disposal.

Atletico will be without new centre-back Diego Godin, because of a knee injury.

In the other clash Greek conquerors of Atletico, Aris have the chance to take Group B by the scruff of the neck by winning against Rosenborg. Aris have never lost at home in Europe - a run now at 22 games - but they will have to get a result in Norway.

Portuguese giants Sporting are in bad shape at the moment. Their hunt for another domestic title has descended into mid-table scraps but the good news is the Europa League can provide a welcome distraction as well as a platform for them to save their season.

Sporting got their Europa campaign underway with a notable 2-1 win away to French side Lille. They entertain PFC Levski Sofia knowing that a win against the Bulgarians will put them in pole position to top Group C.

Sporting's preparations for the game have been completed against the background of the news that they will be without midfielder Pedro Mendes until November after he underwent surgery to repair a knee tendon injury earlier this week.

Levski can also go top with a win after they beat KAA Gent 3-2 in the last round. Ahead of Thursday's fixtures, Gent manager Francky Dury has played down the significance of his side's Europa League meeting with fellow opening round losers Lille.

Dinamo Zagreb's true standing in the competition will be known on Thursday when they travel to Greece to play PAOK. Zagreb's 2-0 win against Villareal was impressive but translating that type of performance outside of Croatia will be a more trickier task for them.

Villarreal on the other hand can look forward to a very winnable home tie against Club Brugge who drew 1-1 with PAOK in their first match. Palermo manager Delio Rossi has revealed he intends to give Fabrizio Miccoli his comeback against Lausanne in their Europa League Group F encounter. Manager Herman van Holsbeeck believes that with a tough double-header against the Greeks AEK Athens coming up, defeat at the Stadion Puljid tomorrow will leave his side with a big mountain to climb to progress.

However, the Greek side have their own problems and are in turmoil following manager Dusan Bajevic resignation from his position at the weekend after AEK's second loss of the season which saw them plummet to 13th in the Greek Super League.

Europa League:Hodgson: No change in priorities

Roy Hodgson insists he places no more significance on the Europa League now than he did before last week's Carling Cup exit.

The loss on penalties to League Two Northampton reduced the Reds' chances of realistically winning a trophy to two, in Europe and the FA Cup, after another disappointing start to the Barclays Premier League.

And while Hodgson admits he has learned lessons from the Carling Cup shock, naming a strong squad to face Utrecht on Thursday in Group K for instance, he stressed winning in any competition was all that mattered.

"Our priorities have been to do the best in every competition," he said.

"Although these days I will be accused on not doing that because people will say the (weakened) team I played against Northampton was not the team to win the game."

Hodgson was asked if victory over the Dutch side, who have not lost at home in four European matches and not conceded in their last three, would give the side an important lift after two defeats and a draw in all competitions.

"There certainly is not the gloom that you would like to suggest," was his response.

"But at the same time I can't say everyone is delighted with the start we have had because we are not.

"We would have liked to have been sitting near the top of the table with 12 or 14 points and we would have been happy as sand-boys.

"That's what we wanted but you don't always get what you want."

Hodgson, who said yesterday he had not decided whether to give striker Fernando Torres his first Europa League start tonight, is looking for the victory which will take his side two-thirds of the way to qualification for the knockout stage.

"We saw Utrecht beat Celtic 4-0 so we are under no illusions that we are playing a very good team and we will have to be very good if we are to get a result from the game," he added.

"Nine or 10 points is probably my guess (of what is required to progress) but don't put any money on it because I'm not very good at predicting these things."

Forward Dirk Kuyt returns to the home of his first professional club and, to date, the only place where he has won a trophy.

The 30-year-old is still hoping to change that during his remaining years at Liverpool after near-misses in the 2007 Champions League final and the Barclays Premier League in 2009.

"My only trophy so far was the cup final here in Holland for Utrecht, against Feyenoord," he said.

"I hope it isn't my last trophy, because I want to win many trophies. "It is a strange feeling that it is my only trophy and I want to put that right."

Ton du Chatinier's Utrecht side reached the Group stages of the competition courtesy of a 4-0 rout of Celtic at Stadion Galgenwaard.

"The motivation of playing Liverpool will be enough," said the coach.

"I am anxious to know what my team will do but that is normal, I'm not afraid."

La Liga:Messi: I'm back and running!

Barcelona ace Lionel Messi has confirmed he has all but recovered from the ankle injury which ruled him out for ten days.

The Argentinean made a comeback after coming on as a second-half substitute in his side's 1-1 draw against Rubin Kazan on Wednesday and emerged unscathed - much to the relief of coach Pep Guardiola and the fans.

Messi revealed to journalists after the match, saying: "I'm extremely content with my ankle. I am happy with it. It has not bothered me and I have not noticed any pain.

"We knew that Rubin would make things very difficult for us. They play well together at the back and they have also scored a penalty against us.

"Perhaps we lacked some fluency in our attack in order to find holes in a defence as tight as theirs."

Meanwhile, fellow striker David Villa, who scored Barcelona's equalizer from the spot, will be out of this weekend's La Liga encounter with Mallorca - paving way for Messi to return to the starting line-up.

Premier League:Park: I'm dissatisfied with myself

Park Ji-Sung admits his performances for Manchester United so far this season hasn't been up to the mark and has vowed to improve.

The South Korean has not featured much in Sir Alex Ferguson's plans this season but was handed a chance to alter that when handed a full 90 minutes in their 1-0 win against Valencia in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Now the 27-year-old is determined to build on that and reproduce some of his impressive form that has endeared himself to the Old Trafford faithful.

"I am not satisfied with my performances this season," Park told journalists.

"I don't know why my performances have not been good. Maybe I was not ready for the season.

"But mentally I have been weak and I have to improve.

"In the first-half last night my performance was bad but at least the second was better.

"It is always difficult to get the balance.

"I missed a couple of games and then played again, although since I joined Manchester United it has been like that so I should know how to deal with it."

With Wayne Rooney ruled out for three weeks due to an ankle injury, Park is adamant his side has enough quality players - including himself - to cope with the talisman's absence.

"Throughout Manchester United's history we always come up with answers to problems," he said.

"Big stars come and go but still the team keep producing the same performances.

"We just concentrate on that to make sure we show our quality on the pitch."

Premier League:Malouda expects tough Gunners test

Chelsea midfielder Florent Malouda expects a tough challenge from Arsenal this Sunday as both sides lock horns at Stamford Bridge.

The reigning champions suffered their first defeat of the season in the 'battle of the cash' against Manchester City last weekend and could hardly have asked for a tougher test when they face-off with another 'top four' side in the form of the Gunners next.

But despite acknowledging the quality of Arsene Wenger's men, the rejuvenated Malouda is confident his side can get back to winning ways in the league this Sunday.

"Everybody knows the passing game of Arsenal," observed the Frenchman.

"They have quality. We have seen many times teams coming here and try to close the game and it depends if you score early in the game but I think that Arsenal have always played the same way with their passing game and technical quality and they try to do the same against everyone.

"Manchester City was a tough opposition and our first defeat. I will speak from our point of view. We must expect a good reaction in front of our fans. We lost against Man City and now we have an opportunity with a home game to get back the winning atmosphere.

"It will be a big challenge for us to win against a team of the 'big four'. Chelsea-Arsenal games are always important because they are just behind us and we want to increase the gap.

"It won't be easy because there are no easy games for Chelsea but now is time to recover and then we have time to think about Arsenal."

Speaking after his side's Champions League victory over Marseille on Tuesday, Malouda is delighted that his side put their back-to-back defeats against Man City and Newcastle behind them.

"I'm happy because we had two defeats before this game and it was great to get back to winning ways," he explained. "We take the lead in the group and now we want to confirm qualification for the next round.

"After seeing the first game of the season people think we are going to score four goals every time. Every game is different.

"We played at a very high intensity in the first half and paid the price in the second half. In the second half we were in control and we hit the post twice so winning was not really a problem."

Europa League:Gent vs Lille Preview

Gent manager Francky Dury has played down the significance of his side's Europa League meeting with Lille.

Both sides lost their opening matches and defeat for either would already leave them adrift of their Group C rivals after just two games.

While Dury admits his side need to get off the mark in their home opener, he does not believe defeat would spell the end of their campaign.

"This is an important meeting, Lille and my team both need a win," he said.

"But after only two games, I do not think we'll be eliminated from the race for qualification if we lose."

Dury also believes his side, who lost 3-2 at Levski Sofia in their opener, will have the "patience to surprise" the visitors who will make the short trip up the E17 for the match.

Lille were comfortable 4-1 winners earlier this month when they made a similarly brief trip to Ligue 1 neighbours Lens, but Dury does not expect his team to be so obliging.

"I saw them score those four goals in Lens," he said.

"The distance from Lille to Lens is almost the same to Gent - but I assure you that we will not concede four goals."

Gent are set to be without Yaya Soumahoro due to a hamstring injury and Yassine El Ghanassy could take his place after returning to training this week.

Lille, who boast teenage Belgian star Eden Hazard, have been in good form this season and are unbeaten in Ligue 1 after holding high-flying Toulouse to a 1-1 draw at the weekend.

In fact, their 2-1 loss to Sporting Lisbon in their Group C opener is their only reverse in league and European action this term.

Lille have never lost to Belgian opposition in European competition, while they have never met Gent in a continental competition.

Champions League:Rubin Kazan 1-1 Barcelona

David Villa netted a second-half penalty to earn Barcelona a point from their trip to Rubin Kazan.

Villa slotted home on the hour-mark to cancel out Cristian Noboa's 30th-minute penalty for Rubin, with both goalkeepers coming agonisingly close to saving the respective spot-kicks.

Barca dominated for large periods but not even the second-half arrival of fit-again Lionel Messi could inspire Pep Guardiola's side to victory, and the visitors almost ended up empty-handed as Rubin substitute Obafemi Martins hit the woodwork late on.

The result leaves Barca on four points from two games on Group D following their 5-1 mauling of Panathinaikos in round one, while Russian outfit Rubin picked up their first point having previously lost to FC Copenhagen.

Rubin proved a problematic opponent for Barca in last season's Champions League, winning 2-1 at the Nou Camp and then holding the 2009 European champions goalless at home, and Kurban Berdyev's side had Guardiola's men on the back foot again tonight after taking a first-half lead.

Barca had bossed the opening stages and hit the crossbar through Pedro Rodriguez before Villa fired just wide, but against the run of play Rubin took the lead.

Victor Valdes' mis-hit clearance gave Vitali Kaleshin the chance to burst into the Barca where he was sent tumbling by Dani Alves as he tried to burst away from the Brazilian and Gerard Pique.

Valdes almost atoned for his part in the incident as he guessed right for Noboa's penalty, but although he managed to get some of his body behind the shot, he could not prevent the Rubin captain from putting his side ahead.

That was a blow to Barca but they had a chance to get back on level terms just before the break when Pedro side-footed another good chance narrowly wide.

Barca had to wait until the 60th minute to even things up, with Andres Iniesta winning a penalty in almost exactly the same place and fashion as Kaleshin had in the first half, Spain's World Cup final hero being brought down by Lasha Salukvadze as he attempted to escape from two defenders.

Villa, like Noboa before him, managed to find the back of the net but not before suffering a scare as the diving Sergei Ryzhikov got a hand to his shot but not enough to keep it out.

The final half-hour was virtually all Barca, with Dani Alves almost capitalising on a terrible back-header only to be denied by Ryzhikov.

The arrival of Messi, who had missed Barca's past two matches with an ankle injury, gave the visitors another attacking threat and the Argentinian drew a good block from Ryzhikov in the 67th minute.
