Shilton: Who will be England's No.1?
Peter Shilton still unsure as to which of the three stoppers will be donning the England No.1 jersey against the United States.
Joe Hart started the England's final warm-up game against the Platinum Stars on Monday with a 3-0 win for the Three Lions the end result.
The Italian stated each player due to feature in the Group C opener would get 45 or 60 minutes under their belts at the Moruleng Stadium near Rustenburg.
Much has been made of who will get the gloves against Bob Bradley's outfit at the weekend.
Despite boasting the number one jersey, David James' hopes seem to have been dashed by a minor knee injury as he failed to feature at all in the 3-0 victory.
Hart got the nod to start in a strong back five made up of Ashley Cole, John Terry, Ledley King and Glen Johnson, with Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in midfield.
Robert Green also got 45 minutes, joining Wayne Rooney and eight others in coming on at half-time.
But Shilton, England's most capped player with 125 appearances, said: "I would think the majority of the side that starts will probably form the basis of the side that faces USA, but I wouldn't say it would be the side.
"I don't think Fabio Capello will want to let the USA or other teams know what his starting line-up is going to be.
"Certain players might be carrying knocks and you don't want to risk them, so no I wouldn't have thought (whoever starts the friendly will start Saturday)."
Shilton is certainly qualified to give his views on England's goalkeeping situation having played in three World Cups and reached the semi-finals in 1990 on a night of memorable penalty shootout drama in Turin against West Germany.
And although the 60-year-old feels competition is fierce between the crop of 2010, he believes Green should get the nod.
"There's very little to choose between all three and it wouldn't surprise me if any of them were put in first, even Joe Hart because of the way he's come through and looked confident," said Shilton, who was helping to publicise Thomas Cook Sport's inclusion as an official supporter backing England's bid to host the 2018 World Cup.
"I know I was nearly 41 when I played in Italia 90 and I played on for another 18 months in what is now the Premier League.
"But I just think he (David James) isn't getting any younger, not every goalkeeper is the same. He's 39.
"I just feel Rob Green is getting better, he has been consistent, he has actually played well for England recently and he hasn't fallen apart for West Ham in a season when they've really struggled.
"He's still got a bit to learn in certain areas - I'd still like to see him be a bit more commanding, but he has improved."
He continued: "Looking at all three, I just feel David James has had his chance, Joe Hart isn't really that experienced and Robert Green probably deserves his chance now."
Spain and Real Madrid number one Iker Casillas has pin-pointed England's goalkeeping situation as "a real problem", identifying the fact neither James, Green or Hart have big-game experience as the chink in the nation's armour.
But Shilton, who enjoyed 20 years at international level, puts an element of Casillas' opinions down to gamesmanship.
"I think you're going to get psychological things from other goalkeepers, other countries," he added.
"David James has got 50 caps for England, he's played in World Cups, so he's our most experienced.
"I suppose he's got a point in that Robert Green and Joe Hart haven't. But Rob has played quite a few England games now, in the last 18 months he's played more than anyone else. He's got a fair bit of international experience.
"The more experience you get as a goalkeeper the better it is, but I think he's at a point now where he's got enough experience to play in a World Cup, definitely."
