Mihajlovic named as Fiorentina boss

Fiorentina have appointed Sinisa Mihajlovic as their new coach, the club have confirmed.

Mihajlovic replaces Cesare Prandelli, who officially rescinded his contract with the Serie A club earlier in the day.

The Serbian steered Catania to Serie A safety last season before resigning last week amid reports linking him with a move to champions Inter Milan.

A statement on the Fiorentina website read: "ACF Fiorentina announce that tomorrow at 1200 Sinisa Mihajlovic will be officially presented.

"The new Viola coach will meet and greet the owner and the board of ACF Fiorentina on Friday morning, then he will be presented to the press in the conference room of the Stadio Artemio Franchi."

Mihajlovic took over Catania in December last year with Gli Elefanti propping up the Serie A table.

The former Inter Milan player steered them to safety with a string of impressive results including victory over Juventus and a historic 3-1 defeat of the Nerazzurri.

Speculation was rife that he was set to take over the reins at his former club, replacing new Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho, but the 41-year-old swiftly emerged as Fiorentina's number one choice after it was revealed Prandelli is set to become the next Italy boss.

Prandelli was the longest serving manger in Fiorentina's history, having been at the Artemio Franchi for five years.

He is very highly regarded in Italy, having instantly transformed the Viola from relegation strugglers into a team worthy of regular Champions League football.

Last season he steered the club to the last-16 round for the first time in their history where they were controversially eliminated by Bayern Munich.

Fiorentina confirmed today they have officially rescinded the 52-year-old's contract.

In a statement the club added: "The decision, mutually made, will allow Prandelli to continue his professional career in a prestigious manner, sitting on the Italian national team bench.

"Good luck to Cesare Prandelli and to all his staff for their new adventure and sincere thanks for the wonderful years of collaboration we have had.

"Together we have done great things which we will never forget."
