James: Capello knows his No.1

David James has revealed his "utmost confidence" in Fabio Capello to ensure England win the World Cup.

And James would not be surprised if Capello alters his team shape and formation during the tournament given the talent at his disposal in the 23-man squad announced on Tuesday by the Italian.

The Portsmouth goalkeeper and his team-mates were given a mini break after England's friendlies against Mexico and Japan before flying out to South Africa.

But the focus will now be back on the bid to lift football's biggest prize and James has faith in Capello to ensure England are in the best possible shape.

The 39-year-old said: "It was nice to be given a couple of days with the family but, come Wednesday, it's heads down and focusing on staying in the World Cup as long as we can.

"I think it was more a case of having to get these friendlies out of the way, not necessarily to experiment, but just to get the games in.

"Without them, it would have been three or four weeks since the last game for a lot of players by the time of the USA game.

"The manager has given all of us a run-out but that is just to make sure everyone is right for the tournament. There are no more friendlies now."

James has often praised the qualities of Capello and added: "I've got the utmost confidence in the way we are going to set up under Mr Capello.

"I also wouldn't be surprised if he does change the shape and things.

"With the 23-man squad he can choose and manipulate to get the best strategy to win games and I think we will do that.

"With the size of the squad there could be opportunities for anyone in there.

"One of Mr Capello's skills is making sure everyone is right so it should be interesting."

There has been plenty of debate over who will be Capello's number one goalkeeper in South Africa, with the vastly experienced James, recent first choice Robert Green and the promising Joe Hart all apparently in contention.

But James, who won his 50th cap when starting for his country for the first time in 13 months against Japan in Graz, believes Capello has already made up his mind.

He said: "I think he knows (who is his number one). Of course, I hope it is myself but I'm also experienced at being number three."
