No Torres? Chelsea will take Higuain

Chelsea are lining up Real Madrid's Gonzalo Higuain as a back-up if their bid to buy Fernando Torres fails.

Reports emanating from the English media suggest Roman Abramovich is willing to part with £70 million to wrest Torres away from Anfield.

Torres himself would probably be quite keen to leave - given the dark clouds looming over the Red part of Merseyside this season. There will be no Champions League football and with the club's finances in tatters, a serious challenge for the Premier League next season looks unlikely.

On the other hand, Chelsea are currently odds-on favourites to lift the domestic trohpy and with Abramovich keen to outspend even Manchester City in the summer, they will likely start as strong contenders for the Champions League as well.

In case the deal does not work out though - Chelsea will target Gonzalo Higuain to partner Didier Drogba up front.

Higuain has been quite prolific this season, with 20 La Liga goals to his name, but has frequently been linked with a move away from the Bernabue.

In the style over substance culture prevalent at Real, he does not quite fit the bill.

And Chelsea are willing to pay up to £34 million for the striker, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph.

The 22-year-old is reportedly demanding £3.9 million a year in wages. That should not be a problem but Higuain also wants the club to pay €4 million to his agent - a stance that could see the deal scuppered.

Sergio Aguero, Franck Ribery, Edin Dzeko and Alexandre Pato are all on the Blues' radar as well.
