Marcel Desailly has lashed out at former club Chelsea, claiming that the Blues need to offload at least five of their stars.
The former Chelsea skipper has targeted the Blues' midfield just a couple of days before their showdown with Manchester United at Old Trafford, saying that Carlo Ancelotti's men have underperformed when compared to Sir Alex Ferguson's.
Michael Ballack and Joe Cole are just two names that have been criticised by Desailly, who said: "First of all they need to get rid of four or five guys who are not Chelsea players.
"I think five players have to leave the club. After that it depends on the finances.
"Previously the midfield was absolutely amazing. Even if they weren't winning the Premier League, it was holding the team. The midfield was playing well.
"Now Joe Cole is not expressing himself as he wanted, Ballack has disappeared the last two months, Mikel is playing his best, but the team misses Essien. So this is why the defence is suffering."
Chelsea are currently second in the Premier League table, just a single point behind the Red Devils. But the Blues go into the early Saturday kickoff needing a win, having fritted away an eight-point lead.
Desailly laments that six teams in the Premier League are better at home defensively than his former club and he has pointed the finger to the club's midfielders.
Desailly added: "When you look at the teams, United have a small advantage on the consistency they are showing in the midfield.
"Players like Darren Fletcher, Nani and Antonio Valencia have made a contribution. Let's not even talk about Ryan Giggs.
"Right the way back to Edwin van der Sar, it's a real team, a group. That's why I believe Manchester United today have more energy than Chelsea.
"It looks like the Chelsea midfield have not delivered protection to the defence.
"The defensive block have had some problems this year, that is why they are not four, five or six points ahead."
