"Beating Rooney would be great"
Barcelona sensation Lionel Messi is determined to outshine some glamourous opposition and win this season's European Golden Shoe award.
The award - formally known at the Golden Boot - is handed to Europe's leading marksman and Messi is well and truly in the mix after a sensational season with the Catalan giants.
The Argentina international, who is the reigning World Football of the Year, has banged in 27 goals for Barca in La Liga so far this campaign, and leads Manchester United favourite Rooney (26 goals) by one and Chelsea forward Drogba (25) by two.
Not surprisingly given the esteemed company he is keeping at the top of the Golden Shoe chart, Messi is thrilled by his place among Europe's elite.
"It would be wonderful to win the Golden Boot," the 22-yearold told The Sun newspaper.
"I look at the list and it is sensational to see I have scored more goals than Didier Drogba.
"But to be just one goal behind Rooney is also enormous.
"Rooney is a big striker and what he is doing is developing into a phenomenal season."
Messi will attempt to add to his haul on Saturday when Barca entertain La Liga strugglers Xerez.
Meanwhile Rooney will be in action for United against high-flying Tottenham also on Saturday. Drogba is set to feature for Chelsea when they travel to play Stoke a day later.
