Bundesliga Weekend Review

Things remain congested at the top of the Bundesliga as Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich and Schalke all recorded wins.

Bayer Leverkusen kept the heat on Bayern Munich and Schalke with a 4-2 win at home to Hamburg.

Stefan Kiessling netted twice, opening the scoring in the 22nd minute and making it 3-1 just after the hour mark.

Eren Derdiyok had restored Bayer's advantage in the 55th minute following Ze Roberto's equaliser (33).

David Rozehnal scored a second for Hamburg seven minutes from time to give them hope, but Gonzalo Castro re-established the hosts' two-goal cushion a minute later.

The win moved third-placed Bayer to within a point of Schalke and three of Bayern.

In the day's other game, Claudio Pizarro's 80th-minute winner gave Werder Bremen a 1-0 success at Hoffenheim to move the visitors a point behind fifth-placed Hamburg.

On Saturday, Arjen Robben proved Bayern Munich's saviour as his late double earned them a 2-1 win over relegation-haunted Freiburg.

Second-from-bottom Freiburg had threatened a shock away win when they led late into the game through Cedric Makiadi's 31st-minute strike.

But Robben, who scored the decisive goal against Fiorentina in midweek to send Bayern into the Champions League quarter-finals, saved his side's blushes as he netted after 76 minutes before winning the game from the penalty spot seven minutes from the end.

Bayern's win lifted them back to the top of the Bundesliga table, two points ahead of Schalke who had gone ahead of them on Friday night with a 2-1 win over Stuttgart.

Borussia Dortmund moved up to fourth with a thumping 4-1 win at 10-man Bochum.

Lucas Barrios scored twice late on to seal the result after a Marcel Maltritz own goal and Mohamad Zidan's strike had put Dortmund in the driver's seat.

Milos Maric was sent off for Bochum after 33 minutes and while Lewis Holtby pulled one back after 53 minutes, Barrios' double in the 74th and 77th minutes settled the contest.

Edin Dzeko scored twice as Wolfsburg beat Borussia Monchengladbach 4-0 to claim their fourth consecutive league win.

Zvjezdan Misimovic and Christian Gentner were also on target to send Wolves eighth.

Hertha Berlin's survival hopes were dealt a major blow as they lost 2-1 at home to fellow strugglers Nurnberg.

The capital club had gone ahead Theofanis Gekas, but they squandered their advantage as Albert Bunjaku equalised before Angelos Charisteas struck the winner in injury time.

Defeat leaves Berlin rooted to the foot of the table and nine points adrift of safety.

Andre Schurrle scored the only goal of the game as Mainz overcame playing with 10 men for the majority of the game to beat Cologne.

Aristide Bance was red carded after 27 minutes, but Schurrle hit the winning goal on the hour mark.

Hannover were 2-1 winners at home to nine-man Eintracht Frankfurt.

Leon Andreasen gave Hannover the lead after 14 minutes and Halil Altintop equalised in first-half stoppage time for the visitors.

Frankfurt were reduced to 10 men in the 54th minute as Selim Teber was sent off for a second yellow card offence.

Sergio Pinto restored Hannover's lead in the 57th minute and Frankfurt lost another player as Maik Franz received his second yellow card a minute into stoppage time.

On Friday, Kevin Kuranyi scored the winner for Schalke as they overcame some stiff resistance from Stuttgart to come out with a 2-1 win.
