City to launch summer bid for Vidic

Manchester City are set to face the wrath of near neighbours United by launching an audacious summer transfer bid for Nemanja Vidic.

Having already lured Carlos Tevez away from Old Trafford and into the mega rich surroundings of Eastlands, City boss Roberto Mancini is intent on strengthening the heart of his defence by capturing the talented Serbia international.

Vidic, who has already been linked with moves to both AC Milan and Real Madrid, has made it clear that as one of United's most consistent performers - he was named Premier League Player of the Season for the 2008/09 campaign - he should be paid accordingly, with the 28-year-old demanding that he be allowed to enter the exclusive £100,000-a-week club.

So far, United have remained silent over his demands even though Vidic's contract with the Red Devils is set to expire in 2012.

News of City's intended approach for one of his prized assets is sure to infuriate United boss Sir Alex Ferguson who has struggled all season with his centrebacks, thanks to both Vidic's and Rio Ferdinand's lengthy absences through injury.

With one eye on the future and the possibility of having to do without Vidic, Ferguson has already signed Chris Smalling from Fulham and is also reported to be monitoring Everton's Jack Rodwell.

City's approach for Vidic is almost a carbon copy of the one the Premier League highflyers made for Chelsea captain John Terry last summer - a move that eventually floundered despite City offering the England international some £250,000-a-week in wages.
